“Come take a walk with me. I want to tell you the story of this neighborhood before SFMOMA got here.”

The instructions come from Avery Trufelman of the design podcast 99% Invisible. She’s narrating the “Neighborhood for Art” immersive walking tour, which can be accessed through the SFMOMA app. SFMOMA is part of a new arts and culture district, but the neighborhood holds remnants of every era since the Gold Rush. During the 35-minute tour, Avery and I explore the perimeter of the museum, learning about urban renewal and a history of transformation as we visit well-established neighbors including Yerba Buena Gardens, St. Patrick’s Church, Jessie Square, and beyond. Download the app and wander with us.

For the Wine Connoisseur

Overlook the garden while sipping on a glass of bubbly. Uncorked Wine Festival is returning to the Metreon for the spring champagne and wine festival on Saturday, June 16. Over 60 wineries will be offering tastings along with live music, gourmet food, and more.

For the Cultural Explorer

As part of the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, head to the Esplanade to celebrate culture and creativity at the 21st annual Native Contemporary Arts Festival. Soak in a diverse program of native music, dance, spoken word, artist vendors, and native crafts.

For the Architect Aficionado

Named one of the top 10 must-see architecture exhibitions, The Open Workshop: New Investigations in Collective Form at the YBCA is an immersive installation that tests how architecture can empower the voices that make up the public realm and the environments in which they exist.

For the City Dreamer

Local artist Jim Campbell recently revealed “Day for Night” on top of the Salesforce Tower. The piece is meant to be an integrated part of the community, as cameras throughout the city capture daily activity and play scenes back at night on top of the tower.
