It’s time for the last dance. Make that the last four dances.
With cooler temperatures on the way, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival wraps up its 2021 season with its popular weekly dance classes.
The classes will be held every Thursday in October, from 11 a.m.-noon at the Yerba Buena Gardens Esplanade. The classes usually draw about 30-50 enthusiastic participants raring to get their cardio on.
“It’s good for all levels of experience, whether you think you’re a dancer or not,” said Cristina Ibarra, YBG Festival’s strategic projects director. “Everyone has fun in these classes.”
The festival added the classes to its program in 2020 as a response to COVID-19 shelter-in-place mandates that shut down gyms and limited options for staying in shape.
“Of course, folks couldn’t go indoors for dance classes,” Ibarra said. “We really wanted to make sure that people were able to exercise and to kind of get the joy that everyone needs from moving their bodies.”
The classes are taught by instructors from Rhythm & Motion, the longtime dance program from San Francisco’s Mission District.
“They’ve been around for a really long time, and they have wonderful teachers who teach a fusion dance class that will get your heart beating,” Ibarra said. “It’s definitely a workout that’s rooted in a lot of dance basics and techniques, so you get a great class that anyone can join.”
